The overwhelming sense that I’ve come home hits me every time I arrive into Honolulu. From the tropical heat that engulfs you as you walk off the plane, the Wiki Wiki bus that whisks you off to the terminal as you arrive, to all the friendly Aloha’s and Mahalo’s you hear everywhere you go, make Hawaii the great place that it is today.
A visit for me to the Hawaiian Islands isn’t complete however, without having a meal or a drink at the absolute beachfront Duke’s Bar and Grill, nestled away in the lobby of the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. Bartering for jewellery and souvenirs at the International Market Place is also a must, and you can walk away with some great deals, and don’t forget to Pick a Pearl! If you’re hungry, check out The Cheesecake Factory for dinner. Be prepared to wait a little for a table and just make sure you leave room for dessert!
Everyone who visits Hawaii should head out to Pearl Harbour, and the cheapest way to get out there is to organise a shuttle with your hotel reception.
If you’re keen to grab some bargains, make sure you head to the Waikele Premium outlets. This outdoor mall is about a 45 minute drive from Waikiki however a scheduled shuttle is also available to take you out there. Be sure to become a VIP shopper online before arriving to get some great discount vouchers.
The other islands of Hawaii are spectacular in their own way, and if you can, make sure you include a visit to at least one! Kauai, the ‘Garden Island’ has some breathtaking views along the Na Pali Coast and the Waimea Canyon. Kauai is the perfect place to get amongst the locals.
As well as the sun and the sand, Maui is home to Mt Haleakala. Watching the sunrise over Maui from the summit is breathtaking, just as long as you can handle the 3am wakeup call and freezing temperatures! Nestled in the shadows of Mt Haleakala you’ll also find some wineries if you feel up for a drive.
Hawaii, better known as The Big Island, is famous for its Ranches, Golf courses and its Volcanoes National Park. If you’re up to it, take a helicopter flight to see some spectacular views and if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of flowing lava.
No matter what you want out of a holiday – Hawaii is sure to have something for you.
